The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed a case of impersonation involving two visually impaired individuals during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
According to JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, a blind candidate employed another blind person—an undergraduate—to take the exam on his behalf. Oloyede disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja, where he reiterated the board’s commitment to supporting candidates with disabilities in accessing tertiary education.
“The Prof. Peter Okebukola-led JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) continues to show outstanding dedication in ensuring that candidates with physical challenges can participate in the UTME,” Oloyede said.
He further explained that JAMB provides full support to blind and other specially challenged candidates, including the refund of their registration fees, as well as transportation, accommodation, and feeding throughout the exam period.
For the 2025 UTME, JEOG successfully facilitated examinations for 501 visually impaired candidates across 11 designated centers nationwide. Their results were released alongside the general UTME outcome on Friday. Unfortunately, one case of malpractice marred the efforts—where a blind undergraduate was caught impersonating another blind candidate.
The board also released performance statistics for the 1.9 million candidates who sat the 2025 UTME. The data revealed a concerning trend: over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200 out of a possible 400, a benchmark commonly used to gauge average performance.
The UTME assesses candidates in four subjects, with the Use of English being compulsory, while the other three subjects align with their chosen fields of study.
Commenting on the outcome, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that the results reflect ongoing government efforts to curb examination malpractice and uphold academic integrity.
