Firstsitenews-Netflix has once again increased its subscription rates in Nigeria, marking its first price hike of 2025 and the third since 2024. This latest adjustment is part of the company’s ongoing global pricing strategy.
According to updated figures on Netflix’s website, the Premium Plan—offering ultra HD streaming on multiple devices—now costs ₦8,500 per month, up from ₦7,000, a 21.43% increase.
The Standard Plan now stands at ₦6,500, up 18.18% from its previous ₦5,500 rate.
The Basic Plan has increased by 14.29%, rising from ₦3,500 to ₦4,000.
Even the entry-level Mobile Plan wasn’t spared, jumping 13.64% from ₦2,200 to ₦2,500.
Pattern of Price Revisions
This hike follows two similar increases in 2024—first in April and again in July. At the time, Netflix justified the changes as necessary to support its growing library of original and licensed content.
“As we enhance Netflix, we’ll occasionally ask our members to contribute a bit more. These changes help fund further improvements,” the company noted in a past statement.
Though inflation wasn’t directly cited this time, Netflix acknowledged that pricing decisions are influenced by local economic conditions, including inflation, currency volatility, and taxes.
Economic Pressure on Consumers
Nigeria continues to grapple with surging inflation, pushing up the cost of everyday essentials, including food and transportation. As digital entertainment costs rise in tandem, many households are finding streaming platforms increasingly unaffordable.
This pressure has been compounded by recent data rate hikes from telecom operators, which have made it even costlier to enjoy services like Netflix.
Global Trend
Nigeria isn’t the only country affected. Netflix has also implemented similar price adjustments in major global markets such as the U.S., U.K., and France.
In South Africa, three of Netflix’s four subscription plans saw increases last month:
Mobile Plan: R49 to R59 (20% rise)
Standard Plan: R159 to R179
Premium Plan: R199 to R229
Only the Basic Plan remained unchanged at R99. New subscribers in South Africa are already being charged the updated rates, while existing customers will see the change reflected in their next billing cycle.
