News: MTN Supports Borno’s Digital Literacy Drive with 750 Tablets for Schools

Firstsitenews- MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has boosted digital education efforts in Borno State with the donation of 750 digital tablets to 15 secondary schools.

According to Arewa PUNCH, each of the selected schools received 50 tablets, as part of the company’s commitment to fostering digital literacy and innovation in education.

Speaking during the handover ceremony held in Maiduguri, MTN’s Acting Managing Director for Borno, Yobe, and Gombe States, Tijanni Salihu, urged school principals and teachers to view the tablets not merely as devices but as tools for stimulating curiosity and enhancing learning.

“This initiative goes beyond distributing digital tools. It reflects our shared dedication to education, innovation, and equal opportunities for every child regardless of their location,” Salihu said. “MTN strongly believes in creating a modern, connected life for everyone.”

He revealed that the initiative was inspired by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who, on behalf of the Federal Government, requested MTN’s support for secondary schools in advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s digital literacy agenda.

“This symbolic handover covers 15 schools in Borno State, with each receiving 50 tablets, totaling 750 devices,” Salihu confirmed.

He added that the selection of beneficiary schools was handled by the state government to ensure fairness and even distribution across all 27 local government areas.

“We gave the state government full responsibility in selecting the schools based on factors such as geographic spread,” he explained.

Salihu encouraged students to make the most of the opportunity and leverage the tablets to pursue their academic goals and explore digital possibilities.

Receiving the devices, the Borno State Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, expressed gratitude to the MTN Foundation. He noted that the gesture aligns with the state’s 10-year strategic education plan.

“The Governor’s strategic plan identifies computer literacy as a key pillar. This donation is a strong boost toward achieving our goal of equipping students with the digital skills needed to thrive in a global economy,” Wakilbe stated.
