Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has confirmed that he will contest for the presidency again in 2027, firmly rejecting speculation that he might run as a vice-presidential candidate alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, Obi said, “I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it.”
Addressing the widespread rumours of a possible alliance with Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party, Obi clarified, “That is not under consideration. No one has ever approached me with such a proposal. People tend to assume a lot, but I’ve never had any conversation with anyone about becoming a running mate.”
The former Anambra State governor reiterated his commitment to the Labour Party, describing himself as an active and committed member.
However, Obi also acknowledged his involvement in a wider opposition alliance including the African Democratic Congress focused on removing President Bola Tinubu from power in the 2027 elections.
“I am part of the coalition that is working to produce a president with both the competence and compassion needed to rescue this country,” he added.
