Firstsitenews-Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a letter addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Jada Ward 1 in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku announced his resignation. The letter, dated July 14 and obtained by Daily Trust on Thursday, was verified as genuine by one of his media aides.
Atiku, who served as the PDP presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, cited a departure from the party’s founding ideals as the reason for his decision.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read.
He expressed deep appreciation for the roles he played within the party, noting, “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and twice running as the party’s presidential candidate has been among the most impactful moments of my life. As one of the founding members, this decision is indeed painful.”
Atiku added that the party's current direction no longer aligns with its original vision. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
He concluded by wishing the party and its leadership success in the future.
Meanwhile, Daily Trust reports that Atiku has been actively leading efforts to form a united opposition coalition. The group recently adopted the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform to contest President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
