Firstsitenews-Family, friends, and Liverpool stars came together in Portugal on Friday to bid a heartfelt farewell to Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Thursday.
A joint funeral ceremony was held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in their hometown of Gondomar, where mourners gathered to honour the lives of the 28-year-old Liverpool forward and his 25-year-old brother.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot led the club’s delegation, accompanied by players including Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo, Darwin Núñez, Federico Chiesa, and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
The coffins of the brothers were carried through the streets of Gondomar in a solemn procession, surrounded by an outpouring of grief from locals and fans.
Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, now with Ajax, and former midfielder James Milner, now at Brighton, also attended, having shared strong bonds with Jota during their time together at Anfield.
Henderson flew in after delivering an emotional tribute at Anfield earlier that day. His presence, along with others, underscored the depth of loss felt by the football community.
IManchester City defender Rúben Dias, Portuguese internationals João Cancelo and Rúben Neves, and former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho were among others who paid their respects. Dias, dressed in black and carrying a bouquet, was seen entering the church with visible emotion.
The ceremony drew hundreds of mourners and football fans, united in mourning the tragic deaths of two young lives gone too soon.
