Firstsitenews-The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has distanced itself from a widely circulated list naming 151 secondary schools whose 2025 WASSCE results were purportedly withheld.
Earlier this week, WAEC officially released the results of the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, confirming that results for 192,089 candidates representing 9.75% were withheld over suspected involvement in exam malpractice.
However, a document that surfaced online, dated August 4, 2025, and titled “Urgent Notice to the Following Secondary Schools Regarding Withheld Results,” alleged that specific schools were under investigation. The letter, purportedly signed by Dr. Florence Ajayi, Director of Examination Malpractice and Irregularities, WAEC Nigeria, instructed principals of the listed schools to report to WAEC's Lagos Zonal Office within 10 working days.
The letter also reportedly directed the school heads to appear before WAEC’s Investigative Panel by August 16, 2025, with relevant documentation and students’ exam scripts where applicable.
Prominent schools named in the list included Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu; Atlantic Hall, Epe; Top Faith International School, Uyo; Corona Secondary School, Agbara; Christ the King College, Onitsha; St. Louis Secondary School, Ondo; Charles Dale Memorial International School, Port Harcourt; Stella Maris College, Abuja; Divine Mercy Secondary School, Asaba; Federal Government Girls’ College, Calabar; Holy Rosary College, Enugu; and St. Theresa’s Catholic College, Ibadan.
In a firm rebuttal via its verified social media handle (@waecnigeria) on Tuesday, WAEC stated that the circulating message did not originate from the Council and should be disregarded.
“Kindly ignore any message listing schools whose results were supposedly cancelled. WAEC will never ask any school to bring candidates' exam scripts to the office where would they even get them from?
“Do not trust any information that is not published through our official handles or accredited media channels,” the Council warned.
When announcing the results on Monday, the Head of WAEC National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, revealed that only 38.32% of the 1,969,313 candidates secured five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics a stark drop from the 72.12% pass rate recorded in 2024.
Dr. Dangut attributed this significant decline to the Council’s newly enforced anti-exam malpractice strategies aimed at curbing cheating during the examinations.
