The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE Internal) results, 54 days after the last paper was written.
Announcing the results in Minna, Niger State, on Wednesday, NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, revealed that out of 1,358,339 candidates who sat for the June/July examination, 818,492 — representing 60.26% — obtained five credits and above, including English and Mathematics.
He added that 1,144,496 candidates (84.26%) scored five credits and above regardless of English and Mathematics.
According to him:
A total of 1,367,210 candidates registered for the exam (685,514 males and 681,696 females).
1,358,339 candidates sat for the exam (680,292 males and 678,047 females).
818,492 candidates passed with five credits including English and Mathematics (60.26%).
1,144,496 candidates passed with five credits irrespective of English and Mathematics (84.26%).
The exam was conducted from Monday, June 16 to Friday, July 25, 2025.
Special Needs Candidates
Wushishi disclosed that 1,622 special needs candidates participated in the exam. Among them were:
586 males and 355 females with hearing impairments.
111 males and 80 females with visual impairments.
Malpractice Cases and Sanctions
The Registrar reported 3,878 cases of malpractice, a 61.58% reduction compared to 10,094 cases in 2024. He also stated that:
38 schools across 13 states were caught in mass cheating and will face sanctions after council deliberations.
Nine supervisors from Rivers, Niger, FCT, Kano, and Osun States were recommended for blacklisting over misconduct, aiding malpractice, and poor supervision.
In Adamawa State’s Lamorde LGA, eight schools were affected by communal clashes that disrupted examinations between July 7 and July 25, 2025. Thirteen subjects and 29 papers were involved, and NECO is working with the state government to reschedule the examinations for affected students.
Performance by States
Kano State recorded the highest number of successful candidates with 68,159 (5.02%).
Lagos State followed with 67,007 (4.93%).
Oyo State came third with 48,742.
The least-performing centre was Gabon, where no candidate secured five credits including English and Mathematics.
Reforms and Transition
Prof. Wushishi further announced that with the implementation of NECO’s revised curriculum, the SSCE will now be conducted on only 38 subjects, aimed at reducing waiting time for results.
He also highlighted NECO’s transition from the traditional Paper-Pencil Test (PPT) model to the Computer-Based Test (CBT) model, with several public and private schools already participating in the pilot phase.
The 2025 results, according to NECO, reflect significant progress in examination integrity, improved performance rates, and a clearer roadmap toward digital assessment.
