A heated football debate has been trending across social media after Michael Owen claimed he was better than Wayne Rooney at age 17.
The former England striker made the statement during a podcast with Rio Ferdinand, sparking widespread reactions among fans.
Addressing the comments on the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sounds, Rooney handled the situation with class and diplomacy.
“Michael and I had very different strengths on the pitch,” Rooney said, reflecting on their contrasting playing styles. “As a kid, I even played on the streets pretending to be Michael Owen, despite him being a Liverpool lad.”
When asked about comparisons at a young age, Owen had insisted: “The only person you could possibly compare me to in our country is Wayne Rooney.”
BBC Match of the Day later put the question to fans on its X account: Who was better at 17, Owen or Rooney? To which Owen confidently replied that he was.
Rooney, however, responded humbly: “I think his comments are fair. Of course, he’s going to back himself. I’d back myself too. But I’d never judge myself against Michael Owen, because he’s someone I actually looked up to and had the pleasure of playing alongside for England and Manchester United.”
