Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has publicly criticised a Reds fan account on X (formerly Twitter) after it posted what he described as a disrespectful comparison between the club’s new high-profile signings and two recently departed players, Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz.
According to Metro Punch, the defending Premier League champions made headlines in the summer transfer window by securing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m and then shattering the British transfer record with the £125m signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. These deals formed part of a record-breaking £3bn Premier League transfer window.
Despite Liverpool’s heavy investment, the fan account in question attempted to downplay the contributions of Núñez and Díaz, sparking Salah’s intervention.
Departures and Mixed Legacies
Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez joined Saudi giants Al-Hilal for around €53m (£46m), ending a turbulent three-year spell at Anfield. Signed for £64m (potentially rising to £85m) from Benfica in 2022, he struggled with inconsistency and criticism, ultimately failing to live up to expectations as Liverpool’s then-record signing.
Colombian winger Luis Díaz, meanwhile, left for Bayern Munich in a £65.5m transfer. Unlike Núñez, Díaz had been a constant attacking outlet under manager Arne Slot, frequently deployed as a false nine and widely appreciated for his work rate and creativity.
Liverpool’s Record-Breaking Window
Liverpool’s aggressive summer recruitment saw them spend £446m, a Premier League record for a single window, surpassing Chelsea’s £434.5m spree in 2023. Alongside Wirtz and Isak, the club also signed Hugo Ekitike (£79m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m) to replace departed players, including Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a crash, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who moved to Real Madrid.
Player sales generated around £228.1m, helping offset the outlay. Had Marc Guehi’s £35m move from Crystal Palace not collapsed on deadline day, Liverpool’s spending would have climbed to £469.5m, with deals for Milos Kerkez (£40m) and Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m) already sealed.
The Fan Post That Sparked Criticism
Instead of celebrating what many have called an “almost perfect transfer window,” the independent fan page @AnfieldEdition posted a collage juxtaposing black-and-white images of Díaz and Núñez with coloured photos of Wirtz and Isak. The post suggested that the new arrivals were superior upgrades, a portrayal Salah slammed as unfair and disrespectful to his former teammates.
The Egyptian forward’s reaction highlights ongoing debates among fans over Liverpool’s transfer strategy and the legacies of outgoing players.
