The Faculty of Arts Alumni Association of the University of Lagos has announced plans to establish a ₦500 million Endowment Trust Fund as part of the faculty’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
According to the association, the fund will be directed towards scholarships for indigent students, research and innovation support, assistance for students with special needs, and the “Light Up Arts Complex” solar project.
Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Francis Shonubi, said the initiative is designed to secure the faculty’s future after six decades of impact.
“This endowment will support students with special needs, fund research and innovations, provide scholarships for indigent students, and implement the ‘Light Up Arts Complex’ solar project,” Shonubi explained.
He added that the milestone offers an opportunity to strengthen the faculty’s legacy:
“The Faculty of Arts has achieved so much with limited resources. This is the time to ensure it gets the support and funding needed to thrive for another 60 years.”
Dean of the Faculty, Professor Akanbi Mudasiru Ilupeju, described the anniversary as a moment of reflection and renewal.
“This 60th anniversary is not just a celebration but a call to action. With the endowment fund, we will be able to enhance our infrastructure, support research, and empower the next generation of scholars,” he said.
This year’s celebration, themed “Humanities as the Tech Solution to Global Crisis in 21st Century Africa,” will examine the role of the humanities in addressing challenges such as governance, climate change, artificial intelligence, migration, education, and sustainable development.
The anniversary events will run from Sunday, October 19 to Saturday, October 25, 2025, featuring academic, cultural, and social programmes, and will culminate in a Gala Night and Award Dinner at the Protea by Marriott Select Hotel, Alausa, Ikeja.
Guests expected include High Chief ’Tunde Fanimokun (Chairman of the Day), Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola (Vice Chancellor, UNILAG, Chief Host), Professor Akanbi Mudasiru Ilupeju (Host), Dr Kayode Fayemi (former Governor of Ekiti State, Special Guest of Honour), Dr Elvis Labode (New Jersey-based lawyer, Keynote Speaker), HRM Oba Abdulsemiu Orimadegun Kasali (Adeboreuwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, Royal Father of the Day), and Hon. Kafilat Moyosore Ogbara (Member of the House of Representatives, Mother of the Day).
Shonubi urged alumni, corporate bodies, and the wider public to rally behind the initiative:
“Together, let us honour 60 years of scholarly distinction while committing to a future where the arts are no longer underfunded but fully empowered to shape society.”
