Political tensions within Nigeria’s opposition landscape escalated on Wednesday as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, launched a sharp rebuttal against Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, over his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
High-Level Political Moves in Bauchi
The development follows a high-profile visit to the Bauchi Government House by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf. The closed-door meeting with Governor Mohammed has fueled speculation about last-minute efforts to sway his political alignment.
Although no official statement was issued after the meeting, insiders suggest the engagement may be linked to attempts to dissuade Mohammed from joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Defection Plans and PDP Crisis
Governor Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, had earlier signaled his intention to leave the party, citing unresolved internal crises and failed reconciliation mechanisms.
Speaking after a meeting with ADC stakeholders led by former SGF Babachir Lawal, the governor described the situation within the PDP as untenable.
He noted that while discussions with multiple political platforms are ongoing, the ADC currently appears to be the most viable alternative.
Wike’s Strong Rebuttal
Reacting to Mohammed’s allegations that he was “planted” within the PDP to destabilize the party, Wike dismissed the claims as baseless and politically inconsistent.
He criticized the governor for what he described as erratic political positioning, referencing past attempts by Mohammed to align with the APC ahead of the 2023 elections.
“It is very embarrassing. He says one thing today and another tomorrow,” Wike stated during an inspection of infrastructure projects in Abuja.

Wike further addressed the PDP’s internal dynamics, asserting that the party remains functional despite ongoing disputes. He also criticized Mohammed’s alleged push for key party positions, describing it as a move from a weakened political stance.
The FCT Minister questioned the governor’s engagements with President Bola Tinubu, suggesting contradictions in his political strategy.
