The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s security situation, alleging the existence of a coordinated international conspiracy behind recent violent incidents, while renewing its demand for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Claims of Coordinated Attacks
In a press briefing on Sunday, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful stated that recent attacks across parts of Nigeria, including the Middle Belt, support what the group described as long-standing warnings previously issued by Kanu.
The group referenced reports attributed to missionary Alex Babir, alleging that the violence reflects a coordinated and ideologically driven campaign rather than isolated incidents such as farmer-herder clashes or banditry.
Allegations of International Involvement
IPOB further revisited the circumstances surrounding Kanu’s 2021 arrest, maintaining its position that he was unlawfully detained following his transfer from Kenya to Nigeria. The group alleged the involvement of international actors, including claims directed at the United Kingdom, although such assertions remain unverified by independent authorities.
Legal Dispute Over Detention
The group also cited a 2022 ruling by the Court of Appeal Nigeria, which discharged Kanu, arguing that his continued detention contradicts judicial pronouncements.
IPOB described the ongoing legal situation as an attempt to silence its leader, whom it characterized as a central voice on issues relating to security and self-determination.
Call for International Intervention
Reiterating its stance, IPOB called on the international community, foreign governments, and global institutions to intervene and facilitate what it termed Kanu’s “immediate and unconditional release.”
The statement also warned of broader implications for Nigeria’s stability, urging stakeholders to take decisive action amid what it described as escalating insecurity across multiple regions.
