BET has officially announced the nominees for the 2025 “BET Awards,” celebrating a vibrant mix of global talent across music, film, television, and sports. Standing out among the African nominees is Nigerian music star Ayra Starr, who secured an impressive three nominations—more than any other African artist this year.
Ayra Starr is nominated in the categories of Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act, a testament to her breakout success and international acclaim over the past year.
Other African stars making waves include Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Tyla, Black Sherif, Shallipopi, Shaboozey, Odeal, Maglera Doe Boy, Uncle Waffles, Dlala Thukzin, Abigail Chams, and TxC—all recognized for their outstanding contributions to global music and culture.
Tems continues her stellar rise with two nominations in the BET Her category for her empowering tracks “Burning” and “Hold On,” both from her acclaimed debut album Born In The Wild.
The Best New International Act category features a strong African presence, with nominations for rising stars Shallipopi, Odeal, Maglera Doe Boy, Abigail Chams, and Dlala Thukzin.
Beyond music, the awards also recognize excellence in film and television. Acclaimed actress and singer Cynthia Erivo earned two nominations—Best Actress and BET Her—for her powerful duet “Defying Gravity” with pop icon Ariana Grande.

From beyond Africa, Kendrick Lamar leads the pack with ten nominations. Doechii, Drake, Future, and GloRilla each scored six nods, Metro Boomin earned five, while SZA and The Weeknd picked up four each.
The nominees were chosen by the BET Voting Academy, composed of industry experts and influencers spanning music, media, marketing, sports journalism, public relations, and the arts. The 2025 “BET Awards” continue to highlight the dynamic and multifaceted expressions of Black excellence across the world.
