Firstsitenews-Lagos, Nigeria – In a bold step toward promoting inclusive education, Union Bank of Nigeria, through its UnionCares platform under the Corporate, Sustainability and Innovation initiative, recently sponsored the Ajofa Special Education Foundation for the Deaf Mathematics Competition. The event was held at the Wesley School for the Hearing Impaired in Surulere, Lagos, and carried the theme: “Impacting Deaf Students and Life with Mathematics in Nigeria.”
The competition brought together representatives from Union Bank, the Lagos State Education Board, school principals, and teachers. Ten students from various schools, including institutions dedicated to the deaf community, participated in the contest.
A collaboration between Union Bank and the Ajofa Foundation, the initiative aims to bridge the gap in inclusive education by empowering students with hearing impairments to showcase their talents, especially in STEM-related fields such as mathematics.
Speaking at the event, Olufunmilola Aluko, Chief Brand and Marketing Officer of Union Bank, reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to inclusivity.
“At Union Bank, we believe that true development must include everyone. Through UnionCares, we continue to support initiatives that provide platforms for all learners to thrive. The brilliant performance by these students shows that disability is not inability. They are mathematicians, innovators, and thinkers whose potential can change the world.”
Francis Ajomiwe, Founder and Executive Director of the Ajofa Special Education Foundation for the Deaf, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Union Bank for making the event possible. Speaking through an interpreter, he said:
“We sincerely appreciate Union Bank’s sponsorship, which helped bring this competition to life. At the Ajofa Foundation, we are dedicated to improving educational opportunities for the deaf community, and this event is one of many ways we’re working toward that goal.”
Representing the Lagos State Education Authority, Bukunola Famakinwa of the School Support Section emphasized the importance of supporting deaf learners, particularly in mathematics.
“Deaf students often face additional barriers in accessing quality education. With proper support, they can excel in subjects like mathematics, which equips them with the skills to solve problems, make informed decisions, and fully engage in society,” she said, urging more inclusive collaboration from the education sector.
The competition concluded with the top three winners: Samuel Megbodofo, Tomilola Shonubi, and Opeoluwa Saka, claiming first, second, and third place respectively. All winners received prizes and branded gifts from Union Bank. Other participants, including students and their teachers, also received branded items in appreciation of their efforts.
