Firstsitenews-An Enugu Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of three masqueraders for allegedly assaulting residents and inflicting bodily harm during the celebration of the Oriokpa Masquerade festival.

The accused Emeka Eze (33), Omeke Uchechukwu (22), and Malachi Nnaemeka (30) were apprehended on Tuesday by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command and subsequently arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, extortion by menace, and causing grievous harm.

According to the police, the suspects used the cover of the masquerade celebration to launch violent attacks on members of the public.

Police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed in a statement on Saturday that the court has adjourned the case to July 31, 2025, for further hearing.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed a manhunt for the remaining members of the masquerade group who are still at large,” Ndukwe added.

The arrests followed a viral video from June 22 showing a group of masqueraders assaulting individuals along Aku Road in Nsukka. Police later confirmed that one male victim was hospitalised due to injuries sustained in the attack.

“With support from vigilant community members, officers were able to identify and arrest three of the suspects, while others fled,” the statement concluded.
