Firstsitenews-U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on China to dissuade Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global trade route, in the wake of American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Speaking on Fox News on Sunday, Rubio emphasized China’s reliance on oil transported through the strait, which handles nearly 20% of the world’s crude supply. “I encourage the Chinese government to reach out to Iran on this issue because their economy heavily depends on oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
Speculation is growing that Iran may retaliate against the U.S. by attempting to shut down the strategic waterway. Analysts have warned that such a move would severely disrupt global energy supplies.
“If Iran takes that step, it would be a grave miscalculation economic suicide,” Rubio warned. “We have the means to respond, but this would affect other countries far more than it would the U.S. It would be a serious escalation requiring an international response, not just ours.”
Meanwhile, tensions continue to rise as Iran threatens to target U.S. military bases. A senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that such bases would be viewed as “legitimate targets” for retaliation.
It remains uncertain whether the U.S. strikes will lead to a de-escalation or further escalation of the conflict.
China, along with Russia and several Arab nations, has condemned the U.S. actions, stating that the strikes only serve to heighten tensions in an already volatile Middle East region.
