Firstsitenews-The Republic of Ireland has deported a total of 35 Nigerians, including five children, via a chartered flight that departed Dublin Airport on Wednesday night and arrived in Nigeria on Thursday.
According to reports by the Irish Mirror, the deportees comprised 21 men, nine women, and five children.
Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, confirmed the development, stating he was “happy to say” all the individuals were successfully returned to Nigeria, despite the flight making an unexpected stop due to a medical emergency onboard.
Although the Irish government did not disclose the exact reasons for the deportations, O’Callaghan emphasized the importance of upholding immigration policies. “Ireland has a rules-based immigration system. It is important that those rules are robust and enforced,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) said it was unaware of the deportation. NiDCOM spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, revealed to Punch Diaspora Tales on Thursday that the commission had not received any prior notification regarding the repatriation.
