Firstsitenews-At least six people have died after a medical light aircraft crashed into a residential building near Nairobi, Kenya, on Thursday. Two others were seriously injured, according to local officials.
This tragedy came just a day after a military helicopter crash in Ghana claimed the lives of all eight people on board, including the country’s defence and environment ministers.
The Kenyan aircraft took off from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport at 2:17 pm local time and was headed for Somaliland. It went down shortly after 3:00 pm in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
“We have lost four people, including the pilot. It was a fatal crash,” said Kiambu County Commissioner, Henry Wafula. He added that two more people died when the aircraft struck a house, and two others on the ground were seriously injured.
Photos from the crash site showed a large crowd gathered as emergency crews sifted through debris. Witnesses said the aircraft caught fire mid-air before crashing into the residential area.
Tasha Wanjira, a resident, told AFP that the plane was burning before impact. Another eyewitness, Irene Wangui, said the aircraft shook nearby buildings before crashing, leaving body parts scattered.
As night fell, many locals remained at the scene, some in tears. One resident, Margaret Wairimu, whose home was destroyed, said, “I have lost everything. Thank God my children were not around.”
Stephen Gitau, CEO of Amref Flying Doctors, confirmed one of their planes a Cessna Citation XLS was involved in the crash but gave no further details. He said the company was focused on the safety and well-being of all involved and would release more information once confirmed.
Amref Flying Doctors, based in Nairobi, was established in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa.
