The Anambra State Police Command has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for a 28-year-old man who attempted to take his life by climbing a power transmission high-tension pole in the Awada area of the state.
Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, noting that it occurred on Tuesday evening.
According to him, operatives attached to the Awada Division swiftly responded after receiving a distress call, cordoned off the area, and controlled the large crowd that had gathered. After several minutes of persuasion by police officers and concerned residents, the man eventually climbed down safely.
He was immediately taken into protective custody.
Ikenga said the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has directed that the man undergo a full medical and mental health assessment to ensure his well-being.
“The Commissioner has assured the victim of necessary support, while urging the public to always seek lawful and peaceful solutions to personal challenges, and to reach out to family, friends, or relevant support groups in times of distress,” the police spokesman added.
The statement also served as a reminder of a similar case reported in September 2024, when the Lagos State Police Command rescued a 65-year-old visually impaired man who attempted to jump into the lagoon along the Third Mainland Bridge with his two children, believing the government would care for them after his death
