February 17, 2026 — The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a press release condemning recent media commentary attributed to a presidential aide regarding the terrorism conviction of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, describing the remarks as biased and politically motivated.
In the statement released by the group’s Directorate of Media and Publicity and signed by spokesperson Emma Powerful, IPOB reacted to an article reportedly quoting comments from Sunday Dare, an aide to President Bola Tinubu, which distinguished Kanu’s conviction from the activism of Sunday Igboho.
Dispute Over Comparative Narrative
According to the release, IPOB rejected the comparison between Kanu and Igboho, arguing that the two figures operate within different ideological and political contexts. The group maintained that media narratives drawing parallels between their activities misrepresent what it described as a broader self-determination struggle linked to the Biafra movement.
The organisation characterised the published commentary as an attempt to justify Kanu’s conviction and frame it within a political lens, alleging that the discourse ignored what it called issues of due process and fairness surrounding the trial.
Historical References in Defence of Kanu
In its response, IPOB cited historical figures who were previously criminalised during political struggles, including Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr., asserting that political activists have historically faced legal prosecution before later gaining global recognition.
The group also referenced Nigerian nationalist figures such as Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo, arguing that past convictions of political leaders should be understood within their historical and political contexts rather than as definitive labels of criminality.
Allegations of Political and Judicial Bias
The press release further alleged ethnic and political bias in the judicial process that led to Kanu’s conviction, claiming that the legal proceedings were influenced by broader political structures within the Nigerian state. IPOB described the conviction as unjust and reiterated its long-standing position that Kanu’s detention is politically motivated.
Broader Security and Self-Determination Claims
IPOB also used the statement to defend the creation of its Eastern Security Network (ESN), asserting that the initiative was aimed at addressing insecurity in the South-East. The group linked its advocacy to wider discussions on self-determination and regional security, while insisting that its movement remains focused on what it termed the restoration of Biafra.

Concluding the statement, IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to its political objectives and expressed continued support for Kanu, stating that criticism and legal actions against him would not deter the movement’s agenda.
