February 13, 2026 — The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued an internal global directive calling on its members and affiliated structures worldwide to support the medical treatment and legal defence of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The memorandum, signed by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, was circulated to coordinators, unit leaders, and members across the organisation’s global network, emphasizing what it described as an urgent and coordinated support initiative.
Call for Global Support Initiative
According to the memo, the directive stems from concerns over Kanu’s condition and the increasing financial demands associated with sustaining his legal representation and medical care following his sentencing in November 2025. The communication stated that Kanu had previously urged supporters worldwide to back organisations that have reportedly been involved in his legal, diplomatic, and medical engagements over the years.
The groups identified in the directive include Ambassadors for Self-Determination, the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), and the Rising Sun Foundation, which the memo described as long-standing partners in advocacy and support efforts.
Rising Cost of Legal and Medical Access
IPOB’s internal communication highlighted logistical and financial challenges linked to Kanu’s detention, particularly the costs of maintaining regular legal and medical consultations. The memo noted that his principal legal team and lead physician are based in Abuja, requiring repeated travel for prison visits.
It further stated that frequent air travel and medical consultations have significantly increased operational expenses, a development the group characterised as financially burdensome and requiring coordinated global backing from its members.
Health Concerns Raised
The directive also referenced ongoing health concerns relating to Kanu, alleging complications that require continued medical monitoring and intervention. These include claims of chronic health issues and trauma-related symptoms, which IPOB said make sustained medical access a priority alongside ongoing legal proceedings.
Unity and Strategic Messaging
Beyond financial mobilisation, the memo issued a strong call for internal unity, urging members to avoid infighting, remain disciplined in communications, and counter misinformation through coordinated messaging. The leadership also advised members to remain vigilant against what it described as psychological operations and internal disruptions.
Anticipation of Major International Development
The internal directive additionally hinted at an upcoming international development expected to be announced in the coming week, which IPOB said would reflect progress in its global diplomatic engagements regarding Kanu’s case.
Organisational Expectations
Members across various units, states, and international chapters were instructed to circulate fundraising information, encourage voluntary participation, maintain communication discipline, and strengthen organisational cohesion during the period.
The memo concluded by reiterating IPOB’s emphasis on solidarity and collective responsibility, framing the initiative as a critical phase in the movement’s ongoing legal and advocacy efforts concerning its leader.
