A delegation of Igbo spiritual leaders has visited the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, expressing solidarity and calling for his release.
The group was led by Chief Mrs. Oliaku Chika Ibeneme, a respected Igbo spiritual figure known as Nne Mmanwu Igbo Niine (Mother of All Igbo Masquerades) and a former Commissioner for Works and Housing in Anambra State.
According to a statement issued after the visit, the delegation said it represented Ndi Nne Mụọ Ala-Igbo nile, described as the titled spiritual mothers of Igboland. During the visit, the leaders reportedly offered prayers, invoked ancestral blessings, and presented symbolic gifts to the detained IPOB leader.
Spiritual Solidarity for Kanu
Chief Ibeneme and members of the delegation described Kanu as a “cherished son” of the Igbo nation, emphasizing their role as spiritual custodians representing the collective ancestral guardianship of the Igbo people.
The group said their visit was intended to demonstrate maternal and spiritual support while also highlighting the importance of justice and unity within Igbo society.
Planned Nationwide Advocacy
Following the visit, the delegation revealed plans to expand their engagement across Nigeria. According to the statement, they intend to meet with prominent traditional rulers, spiritual authorities, and community leaders to promote dialogue and seek broader support for Kanu’s release.
They also called on sons and daughters of Ala-Igbo and Nigerians at large to participate in prayers and peaceful advocacy efforts aimed at resolving the situation surrounding the IPOB leader.
Ongoing Legal Case
Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention at the correctional facility in Sokoto while legal proceedings related to his case continue. His detention has continued to generate reactions from political actors, socio-cultural organizations, and advocacy groups within Nigeria and abroad.
