The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly reacted to recent comments made by Ralph Uwazuruike against its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, describing the remarks as false, misleading, and politically motivated.
In a strongly worded rebuttal signed by Mazi Alex Chinonso Omenka, Coordinator of Emekuku Unit 1, Owerri Zone, IPOB accused Uwazuruike of engaging in what it described as “cheap propaganda” aimed at gaining relevance and attracting favor from anti-Biafra political interests.
The statement followed Uwazuruike’s appeal to Ohanaeze Ndigbo to visit Kanu in detention and warn him against allegedly recruiting Igbo youths for violence.
IPOB dismissed the allegation, insisting that Kanu has not encouraged violence but remains committed to the pursuit of Biafra through self-determination and lawful advocacy.
According to the group, Uwazuruike’s claims were part of a broader attempt to undermine the Biafra struggle and divert attention from the worsening security situation in the Southeast.
The statement further accused Uwazuruike of abandoning the Biafra cause long ago and prioritizing personal interests over the struggle for self-determination.
“Ralph Uwazuruike sold out the Biafra struggle a long time ago. He traded his conscience, dignity, and the name of Biafra for money and favour from the Federal Government,” the statement said.
IPOB also defended the activities of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), stating that the security outfit was established in response to rising attacks by armed groups and the inability of security agencies to adequately protect communities in the Southeast.
The group argued that ESN was created as a defensive structure to safeguard lives, farmland, and ancestral territories.
According to IPOB, attempts to portray ESN as a violent group or to link Kanu directly to violence in the region are deliberate distortions aimed at discrediting the movement.
The statement also addressed recent internal developments within IPOB, including leadership changes and what it described as organizational restructuring efforts.
IPOB maintained that recent decisions taken by Kanu were aimed at strengthening the movement, removing internal saboteurs, and improving organizational discipline.
The group rejected comparisons between IPOB members and extremist groups such as Boko Haram, describing such comparisons as offensive and misleading.
It insisted that IPOB supporters are advocating for self-determination and the protection of their homeland, not terrorism or violent extremism.
Reaffirming support for Kanu, IPOB stated that despite years of detention, the IPOB leader remains committed to his principles and has refused to compromise on the demand for a referendum and justice for the Igbo people.
The group concluded by warning against what it described as sabotage from individuals seeking to weaken the movement, insisting that the Biafra struggle remains active and resilient.
The statement ended with a strong message of support for Kanu and renewed commitment to the Biafra cause.
