The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has commended what it described as the intervention of American stakeholders in drawing international attention to Nigeria’s security situation, while reiterating its demand for a referendum on Biafran self-determination.
In a press statement issued Thursday, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful praised Mark Arnold and members of the United States Congress for what the group called a “bold stance” on issues affecting communities in Nigeria.
International Attention on Nigeria’s Security Challenges
According to the statement, IPOB believes recent comments from U.S. figures have helped spotlight ongoing security concerns in parts of Nigeria, particularly in regions such as the Middle Belt, Southern Kaduna, Plateau, and Benue States.
The group linked these developments to long-standing warnings by its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, stating that the current situation reflects deeper structural and security challenges within the country.
Call for Referendum
Central to the statement is IPOB’s renewed call for a United Nations-supervised referendum to determine the political future of the South-East region. The organization described this as the only viable and peaceful pathway to resolving tensions surrounding the Biafra movement.
IPOB emphasized that its position on self-determination remains unchanged, framing the referendum demand as a lawful and democratic mechanism for addressing grievances tied to governance, security, and regional autonomy.

The group also urged members of the international community to increase diplomatic engagement on issues relating to human rights, security, and political representation in Nigeria. It called on supporters globally to continue advocacy efforts across institutional and diplomatic platforms.
