The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rebuffed claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has failed in governance.
The APC’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, speaking in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, said Adeleke's administration lacked focus and structure, alleging widespread failure across key sectors such as education, health, security, and infrastructure.
“There is no direction in governance,” Basiru said. “Thousands of teachers have been dismissed with no replacements, disrupting the education system. The health sector is in disarray, the health insurance scheme has collapsed, and security is deteriorating with frequent communal clashes. Infrastructure projects are poorly executed, hurting local economies.”
He also dismissed speculations that Governor Adeleke might join the APC ahead of the 2026 governorship election, stating, “I don’t know anyone calling for Adeleke to join the APC, and I am certainly not one of them. As far as I’m aware, he has not shown any interest, and if that changes, we’ll deal with it then.”
Reacting sharply, Diran Odeyemi, a member of the PDP’s National Executive Committee and a key leader in Osun, described Basiru’s comments as baseless and politically motivated.
According to Odeyemi, Adeleke’s achievements are visible throughout the state. “Even the blind can see Adeleke’s progress. Development has reached every ward across Osun. If Basiru claims otherwise, it’s because he rarely visits home. If he returned to Osogbo today, he might not recognize his own street—it has changed that much,” he said.
He accused Basiru of attempting to discredit Adeleke to boost his own chances of securing the APC ticket for the 2026 election. “Basiru is still reeling from the humiliation he faced during the last election, particularly in his own local government areas of Osogbo and Olorunda. He failed to deliver his base and is now trying to stay relevant by attacking Adeleke.”
Odeyemi further dismissed rumors of Adeleke defecting to the APC, calling them baseless. “The governor has no interest in joining the APC. It’s absurd they’re even discussing this. Why would he leave a party under which he defeated the APC? The people of Osun are not impressed with the APC-led Federal Government. They know Governor Adeleke is delivering results, and he has no reason to consider switching parties.”
He concluded by urging PDP supporters to ignore the propaganda and remain focused, assuring that Adeleke’s popularity and performance would secure another victory in 2026.
