Labour Party members defect to PDP in Enugu

 

On Thursday, Labour Party (LP) representatives Dennis Agbo (Igboeze/Udenu Federal Constituency) and Mark-Chidi Obetta (Igboeze South/Nsukka Federal Constituency) officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu. They were joined by Malachi-Okey Onyechi, who represents the Nsukka West State Constituency.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this move comes just two days after LP stalwarts Prince Emeka Mamah and Titus Odo also switched allegiance to the PDP, following the recent defection of Chijioke Edeoga, the LP’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, back to the PDP.

All the defectors were formerly PDP members who left the party during the 2023 general elections to join the LP.

At the PDP Secretariat in Enugu, Onyechi expressed his joy at rejoining his former party, vowing to contribute actively to its progress. He praised Governor Peter Mbah’s developmental initiatives, highlighting a N2 billion project distributed across Enugu’s 260 political wards.

Obetta stated that his return to the PDP was inspired by the state’s developmental progress, particularly in transportation, education, healthcare, and tourism. "Enugu State will achieve greater success through collective support for Governor Mbah," he noted.

Agbo, in his remarks, thanked his constituents for their support and described them as exceptional. He asserted that with their defection, the Labour Party had effectively lost its foothold in Enugu State and predicted tough times ahead for the opposition. He also commended Governor Mbah’s leadership, saying it merited a second term.
