Controversial street-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has sparked fresh debate in the entertainment industry after accusing key players in Nollywood of bias and favoritism—particularly concerning major award events.
In a passionate Instagram video, Portable alleged that veteran actor Ibrahim Chatta was unjustly overlooked at the 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), despite his acclaimed performance in House of Gaa. Chatta had been nominated in the Best Lead Actor category, which was ultimately won by Femi Adebayo for his role in Seven Doors. Chioma Chukwuka, Adebayo’s co-star, also walked away with the Best Lead Actress award.
According to Portable, the outcome was not only unfair but indicative of deeper issues within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
“There’s a gang-up in Nollywood. They refused to give Ibrahim Chatta an award at the AMVCA despite how well he acted,” he said. “That’s the same way The Headies ignored me too.”
Clearly frustrated, the singer continued, “We don’t need awards—we need food and money. Some people can buy awards, but real talent doesn’t need validation from a plaque. Ibrahim Chatta, if man doesn’t reward you, God surely will. You’re my boss and mentor. I love you.”
This is not the first time the industry has been accused of marginalizing Chatta. In 2023, the actor himself suggested that his repeated exclusion from AMVCA nominations was more than coincidental, hinting at an orchestrated disregard for his work.
Portable’s outburst reignites ongoing conversations around fairness, transparency, and credibility in Nollywood awards, raising critical questions about whether true talent always gets the recognition it deserves.
