Tragedy Strikes: 20 Kano Athletes Killed in Fatal Road Crash Returning from National Sports Festival

Firstsitenews-KANO STATE — Tragedy struck on Saturday as 20 athletes from the Kano State contingent lost their lives in a devastating road accident at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of the state.


The victims were returning home after participating in the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when their bus reportedly lost control and plunged off the bridge.


Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, who confirmed the heartbreaking incident, said the vehicle was carrying 30 athletes at the time of the crash. While 20 were confirmed dead, others sustained varying degrees of injuries and have been rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.


Fagge described the incident as a "devastating loss not only to the families of the deceased but to the entire sporting community of Kano State."


"We are in deep shock and mourning. These were young, vibrant athletes who had just represented the state with pride and enthusiasm. This loss is immeasurable," he said.


State authorities say investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, while plans are being made to support the families of the deceased and care for the injured.


Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has expressed his condolences and directed immediate mobilization of emergency support for the victims’ families and survivors. He also announced that flags across sports facilities in the state would be flown at half-mast for seven days in honor of the departed athletes.
