2025 BET Awards: Nigerian Artists Shine as Ayra Starr Leads African Nominees


The nominations for the 2025 BET Awards have been announced, with Nigerian artists making a strong impression across multiple categories.


Ayra Starr emerged as the most nominated African artist, securing three nominations in the categories of Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act. The 21-year-old has been gaining global recognition thanks to her chart-topping songs and captivating performances.


Also representing Nigeria, Burna Boy and Rema earned nominations for Best International Act. Burna Boy, a four-time winner of the award, continues to be a major figure in the Afrobeats movement. Rising street-hop sensation Shallipopi was nominated for Best New International Act, highlighting the growing global reach of Nigeria’s next-generation talents.


Tems, a Grammy-winning singer, received a nomination in the BET Her category for her empowering songs “Burning” and “Hold On,” both featured on her debut album Born In The Wild.


The 2025 BET Awards will be held on June 9 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles and will air live on BET.


In the broader competition, Kendrick Lamar leads this year’s nominations with 10 nods, followed by artists like Doechii, Drake, Future, and GloRilla.
