Firstsitenews-The death toll from the tragic passenger jet crash in Ahmedabad, India, has climbed to 279, according to a senior police official who spoke on condition of anonymity. This updated figure surpasses the earlier count of 265 and marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters of the 21st century.
The Air India flight, en route to London’s Gatwick Airport, was carrying 242 people. Only one passenger survived the devastating crash. Additionally, at least 38 people on the ground lost their lives when the aircraft plummeted into a densely populated residential area near the airport.
Authorities caution that the final casualty count may still change, pending the completion of DNA identification to confirm victims' identities.
Air India reported that those on board included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, one Canadian, and 12 crew members.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner reportedly issued a mayday signal shortly after takeoff on Thursday, reaching an altitude of just 100 metres (330 feet) before crashing around midday.
On Friday, investigators recovered one of the aircraft’s black boxes from the wreckage, while search efforts continue for the second flight recorder. Forensic teams remain at the crash site, conducting detailed examinations.
Aircraft manufacturer Boeing confirmed it is in communication with Air India and has offered its full support during the investigation. This incident marks the first crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
