The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a strongly worded internal memorandum reaffirming that its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, remains the supreme authority within the movement and that all directives emanate solely from him.
In the statement, signed by Emma Powerful, IPOB’s Spokesperson and Secretary of the Directorate of Media and Publicity, the group emphasized that its chain of command is not a recent development but has existed since the organization’s formation. According to the statement, the structured directorates within IPOB were deliberately established by Kanu to ensure discipline and organizational continuity, even during periods of crisis.
The spokesperson stressed that Kanu’s word is final in all IPOB affairs, noting that anyone questioning this authority either lacks historical understanding of the movement or is acting in deliberate defiance of its internal discipline.
IPOB also clarified the role of its Media and Publicity Directorate, stating that it predates most other directorates within the movement and remains the official channel through which any information concerning IPOB is communicated to the public. The statement warned that no individual, group, or media platform is authorized to issue statements or represent IPOB outside this established structure.
Addressing leadership matters, the group reiterated that Kanu appointed members of the Directorate of State (DOS) while in detention through his former lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, emphasizing that such appointments demonstrate that Kanu’s authority remains intact despite his incarceration. The statement added that this position was recently reaffirmed during a visit by IPOB representatives to Kanu.
On the issue of the sit-at-home scheduled for Monday, February 2, IPOB described the action as a one-off protest, stating that it was organized in response to what it termed the “intimidation” of traders and residents by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo over expressions of solidarity with Kanu. The group insisted that the sit-at-home decision is not subject to reinterpretation or alteration.
The organization also dismissed reports alleging that some individuals claiming to represent IPOB’s DOS held a secret meeting with Governor Soludo. According to the statement, such individuals neither represent IPOB nor speak for Nnamdi Kanu, and any assurances allegedly given to the governor were described as unauthorized and misleading.
Reaffirming its ideological stance, IPOB stated that Kanu has consistently aligned himself with what it described as the oppressed masses and would not endorse actions perceived as compromising that position. The group warned members against internal disputes and urged those in doubt about leadership directives to seek clarification directly rather than engage in public speculation.
The statement concluded by asserting that IPOB remains firmly committed to the vision and leadership of its founder, warning that anyone unwilling to follow Kanu’s directives should disengage from the organization rather than operate under its name.
