Breaking News: ESUT School Fees Hike: Burden or Necessity?

 

      The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has recently made headlines following a notable increase in tuition fees, with students now expected to pay up to ₦60,000 more than before. This move has sparked a wave of reactions from students, parents, and education stakeholders across the state and beyond.

      For many, the fee hike comes as an unexpected blow amid the rising cost of living in Nigeria. With inflation affecting every sector of the economy, families are already struggling to meet daily needs, let alone shoulder the added financial burden of increased university tuition.

      Students at ESUT have expressed frustration and anxiety over the adjustment, stating that the hike could force some to drop out or defer their studies. “It’s hard enough trying to survive on campus with limited support,” said one student. “Now we have to worry about where to find an extra ₦60,000.”

They call on the state government to intervene and prioritize education by increasing its subvention to the university, rather than placing the burden on already struggling students.

      This development reignites a larger conversation around the affordability of higher education in Nigeria. Public universities, traditionally viewed as more accessible alternatives to private institutions, are increasingly becoming out of reach for many Nigerians.
