A legal analyst based in Abuja, Christopher Chidera, has raised serious concerns over the circumstances that led to the removal of lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor from the legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, alleging that critical legal failures significantly contributed to Kanu’s prolonged detention.
In a public briefing note released on Monday, Chidera argued that the narrative surrounding Ejiofor’s disengagement has been heavily distorted, with key legal issues deliberately ignored.
According to him, the controversy stems from events following the landmark ruling of the Court of Appeal on October 13, 2022, which discharged Kanu and effectively terminated criminal proceedings against him.
Chidera noted that despite the court’s ruling, the Federal Government under former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami filed what he described as an irregular civil stay of execution application.
He argued that the move was legally questionable because the Court of Appeal had already exhausted its jurisdiction and become functus officio, meaning it no longer had authority to revisit the matter.
According to the legal analyst, Kanu’s legal team, led by Mike Ozekhome with Ejiofor playing a key role, failed to file a Preliminary Objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction to entertain the application.
Chidera described this omission as one of the most consequential legal errors in the case.
He stated that this failure removed a critical procedural defense that could have prevented further proceedings and possibly halted the legal chain of events that followed.
According to him, the failure ultimately enabled what he described as an unprecedented legal anomaly — the continued detention and eventual conviction of Kanu despite an earlier discharge by the Court of Appeal.
Chidera further alleged that concerns raised by Kanu’s family, particularly his brothers, over these legal lapses triggered demands for accountability within the legal team.
Rather than addressing those concerns directly, he claimed Ejiofor allegedly launched a campaign of false accusations and character attacks against Kanu’s family.
The analyst accused the former counsel of attempting to isolate Kanu from loyal family members while shifting attention away from the alleged professional failures.
He also claimed that false narratives were circulated among members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and on social media to obscure the real reasons behind Ejiofor’s removal.
Chidera maintained that the issues now before the Court of Appeal go beyond personal disputes and touch on deeper constitutional questions involving jurisdiction, fair hearing, and compliance with appellate court orders.
He stressed that accountability remains essential, especially in high-stakes legal matters involving liberty and constitutional rights.
The analyst called on Ejiofor to publicly address the allegations and provide clarity regarding the legal decisions made during his time on Kanu’s defense team.
He concluded by stating that the ongoing appeal presents an opportunity for Nigeria’s judicial system to confront foundational legal irregularities in the case and reaffirm the principles of justice and rule of law.
The latest development adds another layer of controversy to the long-running legal battle surrounding Nnamdi Kanu, whose case continues to generate intense debate across legal, political, and public circles in Nigeria.
