The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has announced the dissolution of the movement's third Directorate of State (DOS) administration and the inauguration of a fourth administration
The announcement, contained in a statement dated June 17, 2026, said the reorganization was aimed at restructuring the movement's leadership and addressing what were described as shortcomings in the outgoing administration.
According to the statement, Nwaọgụ, who is based in the United States, will immediately assume responsibility for the coordination and day-to-day management of IPOB affairs under Kanu's authority.
The statement outlined several reasons for the dissolution of the previous administration led by Chika Edoziem, including alleged failure to adequately address the welfare of detained IPOB members, internal divisions, communication challenges, and what was described as declining confidence within the movement.
IPOB stated that the new administration has been mandated to rebuild organizational unity, strengthen communication structures, improve welfare programs, and refocus the movement on its stated objectives.
As part of the restructuring, several new appointments were announced across finance, welfare, media, diplomatic, continental, and national coordination positions. Emma Powerful was retained as spokesperson and media publicity secretary.
The statement also announced the establishment of an Elders Advisory Council, which will serve as a strategic advisory body positioned between Kanu and the Directorate of State within the organization's leadership structure.
In addition, all previous suspensions and expulsions within the movement were reportedly set aside, with affected members directed to resume their former positions pending further administrative review.
The statement further instructed IPOB officers and coordinators worldwide to establish contact with the organization's headquarters in Germany for additional directives.
IPOB advised members to rely on Biafra Radio and Biafran Vanguard for official information while efforts continue to recover and restore other communication platforms.
The organization said the restructuring represents an effort to renew leadership, strengthen internal cohesion, and advance its campaign for self-determination.
The statement was issued under the authority of Nnamdi Kanu, who remains in detention in Nigeria while legal proceedings relating to his case continue.
