The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly criticized Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, over comments attributed to his administration regarding former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi's call for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued on June 15, 2026, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful described the governor's position as contradictory, alleging that Soludo had previously supported calls for Kanu's release but was now taking a different stance.
According to the group, Soludo visited Kanu while he was in detention in 2022 and publicly advocated for his release. IPOB also referenced previous remarks by Anambra State officials suggesting that efforts had been made toward securing Kanu's freedom.
The group questioned what it described as a change in the governor's position, arguing that Peter Obi's recent call for Kanu's release was consistent with earlier appeals made by various political, religious, and socio-cultural leaders.
IPOB further alleged that political considerations were influencing Soludo's current posture, accusing him of abandoning the interests of the South-East in pursuit of future political ambitions.
The statement also criticized the continued detention of Kanu, maintaining that calls for his release are rooted in concerns about justice and fairness. IPOB argued that the issue extends beyond ethnic or regional politics and has attracted support from individuals and groups across different parts of Nigeria.
The group expressed solidarity with Peter Obi and other public figures who have advocated for Kanu's release, insisting that such calls should not be viewed as attacks on the judiciary but rather as legitimate expressions of concern regarding his prolonged detention.
IPOB concluded by reaffirming its demand for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu and urged supporters to remain committed to what it described as the pursuit of justice, equity, and self-determination.
